Helen went to the post office earlier this week and picked up a box of 30 baby chicks that will grow up to be layers. Half are from a group of breeds that lay brown eggs. Have are breeds that lay blue eggs. Fortunately, the space in the garage for them was well prepared ahead of time for their arrival, and they have pretty cushy attention in a shelter warmed with heat lamps. Helen’s goal is to grow the chicks, and when they are old enough to be outside a brooding space and ramble around, she will give about half away to the likes of Mustard Seed Farm or friends. Helen is happy to let people visit the chicks. And a good time for visitations would be Saturday, May 13, from 10 am to 2 pm during the Burnett Urban Farm open house.
